ARE YOU GAME FOR SOME HIP HOP?


It’s hip! It’s hop! It’s what youth energy is all about!


Buds Youth Theatre proudly presents HIP HOPERA, the smash hit play-cum-musical that played to full, and sometimes overflowing, houses in The Actors Studio, KL.


HIP HOPERA is essentially about the ups and downs, twists and turns of a heterosexual courtship – finally after 2003’s very gay theatre scene. The story kicks off when a bitter cynical and somewhat world-wary Salina (Mariel Reyes / Elizabeth McGowan) gets a job in a nightclub owned by the seemingly very confident and suave but cannot sing Johan, otherwise known as Jay (Chris Ngyee). At first she is put off by him, but slowly and unknowingly finds herself attracted to him when he seems to open up to her.


However, Jay’s flirtatious ways with the other girls and obnoxious behaviour with his subordinates – bartender Derrick (Joel Lim) and DJ Trey (Scorpion Zsa Zsa), got the better of Salina and sinks her back into disillusion once again. Fortified with pearls of wisdom from the no-nonsense-dun-pray-pray Doris (Celine Rosa Tan), Salina decides to drop the matter. Meanwhile, Trey attempts to discourage Jay from pursuing Salina, but is rebuked by Derrick for talking too much cock.


Eventually, Jay realises his mistakes and begins trying to salvage his relationship with Salina. Needless to say, after much laughter and a few tears, everybody lives happily ever after…

Written by Huzir Sulaiman (of Atomic Jaya fame) this musical comedy is laden with infectious music that spans cutting-edge dance, industrial rap, soul, R&B and hip-hop. It also boasts a cool chorus of Afro-Divas and a troupe of stunningly choreographed dancers. Set in an actual bar - MOX Bar & Café, HIP HOPERA promises to be the first most fun theatrical event of the year 2004!
