i did a good deed yesterday.
being the festive season, i went to a fren's new house in admiralty. boarded the train at bukit batok and alighted at sembawang. upon alighting, i saw 2 blind people coming out from the same train. they whipped out their guiding canes and upon a few steps, hit the window glass planes at the platform.
they quickly found their orientation and managed to make their way to the escalators. i looked around for a lift but it was not ready at the station. lots of people quickly made their way past them, never give them a look, or a second glance. this can be a good and bad thing but i'm not going into that.
i was walking just a few steps behind them, ready to render my help should they need it. some people might approached them straight away but i figured they might value being independent. after all, that's why they were taking the train alone in the first place.
they made it to the escalators all right...except it was going up instead of going down. i made my move then. from what i know, one have to hold his/her arm, somewhere near the biceps and above the elbows. stay close to them and make known any steps, slope etc etc. first thing he said was to thank me, then he withdrew his guiding cane immediately. i was immensely impressed by his trust in me. no doubt it was a small gesture of withdrawing (it might be a protocol) but it really said a lot. this gesture itself was enough to thank me.
didn't i mention that there were 2 of them. the one i approached was a guy, the other was a lady. i wondered if they are an item...anyway, i really dont know how am i supposed to lead them? do i hold the both of them? or do i lead one and the other will follow by linking hand with the first? i choose the later.
they were making their way to a taxi stand. being the first time there, i absolutely had no idea where it was. i asked them and they said we had to cut through sun plaza and there would be one at the other side. i thought every mrt station would have a taxi stand, why must we cut through sun plaza? well, they trusted me and the least i could do is to trust them back.
once we exited sun plaza, there was a set of stairs. i directed the guy to the railings, hoping it will aid him in going down, it did aid him but i completely forgotten about the lady. she was holding the guy's hand and did not know the existence of the railings and knocked into it. i was so embarrassed. some help i was.
upon reaching the taxi stand, i cut the Q aggressively, doubt anyone will mind and not that i care anyway. they finally got into a cab and sped away.
not bad for a first try but i could have done better.
and i thought i would win some money at gambling later after this good deed...
i lost.
Are you vicariously living through me in the hope that my accomplishments will validate your mediocre life and in some way compensate for all of the opportnunities you botched?
